If you use a humidifier inside your home, chances are you have an issue with overly dry air, causing problems for you and your family. A humidifier is a great addition that can help balance out the moisture levels in the air and help relieve many pesky symptoms. However, one issue that many homeowners face when they have a humidifier installed is knowing whether or not the humidifier is actually doing its job.

The last thing you want is to invest in a humidifier and not get the benefits you were promised. Here are some telltale signs that will let you know if your humidifier is working correctly or not.

How a Humidifier Works

The goal of a humidifier is to force extra moisture into the air to increase the overall humidity. There are a few different types of humidifiers available, including cool mist humidifiers, warm mist humidifiers, evaporative humidifiers, vaporizer humidifiers and ultrasonic humidifiers. Some are designed to raise the humidity without raising the temperature, some raise the temperature as well, some help circulate the humidity around the room, and some give you a variety of functions to choose from.

How Do You Know If Your Humidifier Is Working?

Seeing that the humidifier is on and there is power to the unit is a good first step to tell if your humidifier is working, but that doesn't mean it's getting the job done. In some cases, the absence of negative effects helps you realize that your humidifier is working properly and doing the job it's supposed to do. Here are some things to watch for:

  1. Do you get shocked by static electricity when walking across the carpet? Quite often, when the air inside your home is overly dry, it will increase the electrostatic charge when walking across carpets.
  1.  Does anyone in your household get nosebleeds? If the humidifier works properly, you won't have to worry about breathing in dry air 24 hours a day. There will be more than enough moisture in the sinuses to avoid major nosebleeds and similar issues.
  1. Does anyone in your household suffer from dry throat, hair, or skin? You'll know if your humidifier is helping if common problems like dry and scratchy throats, dry, brittle hair and dry skin are no longer an issue.

Basically, if you're no longer suffering from any of the effects of dry air, then you can feel confident that your humidifier is working just fine.

Benefits of a Humidifier While Sleeping

Some of the most significant benefits people report when they have a working humidifier inside their home pertain to sleeping. If you've ever tried to have a good night's sleep in a room with excessively dry air, you know just how challenging it can be and how many unpleasant side effects can creep up by morning.

A quality humidifier keeps your mucous membranes moist, preventing congestion and reducing the severity of snoring. Other symptoms such as dry throat, irritated eyes, chapped lips, and even some infections can be avoided while sleeping if you have a good whole-home humidifier in the house.
